Loss of Rainbow River Vegetation

Dramatic increase in recreational use of the Rainbow River has led to significant aquatic vegetation destruction. Photos taken in July 2009 show amount of vegetation floating down the river.

Rainbow Rivel Closed due to bacteria levels

The Marion County Department of Health closed four swimming area on the Rainbow River on July 23, 2009 due to high bacteria level indicating fecal material. RRC sponsored a public meeting on July 26th to hear from the Health Dept on their testing and to express concerns about the souce of the bacteria..

Turtle Harvesting and FWC Rule Process Turtle harvesting for the asian food market has dramatically reduced the turtle population on Florida Rivers. FWC has passed a rule to prevent commercial harvesting in Forida and the final public hearing is on June 17, 2009 at the Plantation Inn in Homossassa, FL.

FWC Bans Turtle Commercial Harvest

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted to institute a rule that bans commercial harvesting of turtles in Florida
